Why Order Actually Matters Here
A dark spot routine usually involves more than one active, and the order you apply them in affects how well each one actually works — and how much irritation you risk in the process. The general rule: thinnest, most active-focused products first, heaviest and most protective last.
A Simple AM / PM Split
Morning:
- Cleanse
- Vitamin C Serum (12% ascorbic acid, alpha arbutin, polyglutamic acid) — its antioxidant role is most useful during the day, when it's actively helping defend against UV and pollution exposure
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen — non-negotiable, and arguably the single most important step in any dark spot routine. Unprotected UV exposure can undo the progress your actives are making
Evening:
- Cleanse
- Azelaic Acid Serum (with HPPA and hyaluronic acid) — evening is a natural fit since you're not relying on it for daytime protection, and it won't interact with sunscreen application
- Moisturizer
Why Split Them by Time of Day Instead of Layering Both at Once
Vitamin C and azelaic acid aren't a risky combination the way some acid pairings are, but splitting them across morning and evening keeps each routine simpler and gives your skin one active to process at a time rather than two. It also means you don't have to worry about which one goes first — there's no shared application window to sequence.
Where Exfoliants Fit In
If your dark spot routine also includes an exfoliating step — a glycolic cleanser or a salicylic acid serum — that adds a third active into the mix. The safest approach: keep exfoliation to 2–3 nights a week, on nights you're not also using azelaic acid, so you're not stacking multiple actives in the same routine while your skin is still adjusting.
What Not to Skip
Sunscreen is doing as much work for dark spots as any active in your routine — UV exposure is what triggers and perpetuates hyperpigmentation in the first place. A dark spot routine without consistent daily SPF is working against itself, no matter how well-formulated the serums are.
The Takeaway
Vitamin C and sunscreen in the morning, azelaic acid in the evening, exfoliation on separate nights if you're using it — that's a routine order that lets each active do its job without overwhelming your skin. See the Azelaic Acid Serum or see the Vitamin C Serum.
