Copper peptides show up in a lot of skincare marketing copy with a lot of confidence and not much explanation. The specific molecule behind most of these claims is GHK-Cu — a naturally occurring peptide fragment bound to a copper ion that your body produces in decreasing amounts as you age. Here's what the actual research says it does, what it doesn't, and where the evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests.
What GHK-Cu is
GHK-Cu is a tripeptide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine) that naturally binds copper. It was first identified in human plasma decades ago, and levels of the naturally occurring peptide decline with age — which is the basis for the theory that topically replacing it could support some of the skin functions it's associated with. In skincare formulations it's typically included at low percentages alongside other actives rather than as a standalone treatment.
What the evidence actually supports
Collagen and skin structure. Laboratory and review research has linked GHK-Cu to stimulating collagen synthesis and supporting the skin's natural remodeling process. A 2018 review of the compound reported that topical application was associated with increased skin density and thickness, alongside reduced sagging, in the studies it covered.
Fine lines and elasticity. Small human trials — generally in the 40 to 70-participant range, run over about three months — have found reductions in fine lines and improvements in elasticity with daily use of GHK-Cu-containing formulations. These are real, published results, but the sample sizes and durations are modest, which is typical for peptide cosmetic research and worth keeping in mind when a headline calls a peptide a "breakthrough."
Wound healing. Animal studies support the peptide's role in wound contraction and granulation tissue formation. This is one of the more mechanistically well-understood effects, though it doesn't automatically translate into a specific claim about everyday cosmetic use — wound models and intact skin barrier applications aren't the same thing.
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Research has also associated GHK-Cu with reducing markers of inflammation and free-radical damage, with some suggestion of a protective role against UV-related oxidative stress — relevant in a sunscreen formulation, though this is a supportive mechanism rather than a substitute for UV filtering.
Where to be cautious
The evidence base for GHK-Cu is real but limited. Most human studies are small and short (a few months, not years), so there isn't strong long-term safety or efficacy data at the timescales people actually use skincare. There's also a documented phenomenon sometimes called "copper uglies" — a paradoxical worsening of skin appearance from overuse, theorized to relate to increased metalloproteinase activity at high or excessive concentrations. This is a reason formulators use copper peptides at controlled, low percentages rather than maximizing the dose, not a reason to avoid a well-formulated product entirely.
Where it fits in a routine
